The purpose of a Foundation
There are two main types of foundations, shallow and deep. Shallow foundations are used for common housing and smaller structures whilst deep foundations are required for larger structures like warehouses and skyscrapers. These foundations are there to spread the weight of the whole building over the ground to avoid damage from the weight causing the ground to shift beneath it while also to provide an anchor in case of emergencies like earthquakes, floods, and strong winds. Most obviously it gives the rest of the construction a solid and level building surface and takes the base deep into the ground to increase overall stability.

What a good Foundation needs
A good foundation needs to be designed and constructed to adequately disperse the weight of the structure it is supporting over a wide area. It requires a rigid and sometimes anchored base to ensure that stability. If the ground in a particular area is prone to shifting or movement then it needs even deeper anchors to prevent displacement.
Types of Foundations
In California, we have three main types of foundations, Raised with a crawlspace, solid concrete slab, and basement. A raised foundation with a crawlspace is a foundation that is held 18 inches off the ground with piers and beams. This is common in flood-prone areas to prevent damage to the house and also to prevent infestations in areas with the damp ground, where rodents and insects run rampant. Solid concrete foundations just have a thick slab of concrete that is reinforced with wire mesh and steel bars laid directly onto leveled earth that is covered in crushed gravel. Basements are similar to raised foundations however use a high foundation wall over the initial foundation allowing people to walk around, live in or use the space as storage.
